چکیده
Abstract A hydrogeochemical study was carried out on the shallow Catania Plain alluvial aquifer, in eastern Sicily to reconstruct its hydrogeological structure, meteoric recharge and assess influence of human activities groundwater. To characterize geochemistry two sampling campaigns were out, August–October 2004 April–May 2005 47 sites distributed throughout plain. The samples collected analyzed for physical–chemical parameters major ions, as well stable isotopes (δ 18 O δ 2 H). Alluvial deposits with heterogeneous grain sizes constitute aquifer. Varying conditions vertical horizontal permeability lead presence a multilayered aquifer different confinement partial interconnection among layers. sampled waters separated into four groups compositions due water–rock interaction lithologies present around area. Maps electrical conductivity sulfate show systematic control land use, correspondence biggest farms. High concentration is both natural between local Etna’s plume mixing groundwater coming from area where evaporitic rocks Gessoso Solfifera formation are present. In addition, anthropogenic contamination cannot be ruled out. rain gauge network, consisting 3 located at altitudes, installed collect determine isotopic data H O) measure monthly rainfall amount. Based composition waters, it has been established that beyond direct recharge, recharging areas North (Mt. Etna) South (Hyblean Plateau).

This paper presents results of hydro-chemical processes controlling groundwater chemical composition, using an integrated application of hierarchical cluster analysis and factor analysis of a major ion data set of groundwater from Mighan playa aquifer. Cluster analysis classified samples into four clusters(A, B, C and D) according to their dominant chemical composition: cluster A (dominant comp...

Prevalence and incidence of multiple sclerosis in Catania, Sicily.
OBJECTIVE An epidemiologic survey was conducted to determine the prevalence and incidence of MS in the city of Catania, Sicily, Italy. Prevalence rate was calculated as point prevalence at January 1,1995, and incidence during 1974 to 1995. METHODS The authors studied the frequency of MS in the community of Catania in a population of 333,075 inhabitants according to the 1991 census. The primar...
